Stephen & Penelope- Knitting & Crochet Yarns: what do users think?

Ivy Antunes: Beautiful upscale yarn. Definitely good to come with a project in mind. Ended up only buying some lovely wooden buttons but still happy with my visit. The shawls and samples on display are stunning.

Helena navarro: I have been to this store before, just to buy a gift to my Mother, after many years I came back to Amsterdam last month, and now I'm kniting too, so it was another experience. The staff are lovely, fun and they helped me to choose my Amsterdam souvineir wool =) For sure, you need to visit it!!

Vicki Janks: Awesome discovery of this shop. Selection great, in fact so good I will have to return before leaving. If possible give yourself time for return visit as your brain needs time to process and decide. What a wonderful position to be in. Staff friendly, informative and helpful. Best find in Amsterdam.

Jenny Lantair: Beauriful range of yarn in a sweet, helpful store. The examples of yarn knitted up and produced designs are really helpful to get you thinking about the feel and look of what you plan to make. Really cute additional products, pins and stickers etc.

Tessa Snikkers: I have always always wanted to come to S&P, and I had a truly great shopping experience! The yarn selection is insane and the staff were unbelievably nice and helpful. I felt very welcome and my baby was too (even though he wanted to drool on everything) and I will be coming back soon. Thank you!

Folkert Martens: Friendly staff and huge selection of yarn and accessories. Staff speaks mainly English, limited Dutch. When we bought a book, they offered us a signed one instead, which we found thoughtful.

Chabrova Olga: I love this place, the world of bright yarn, modern knitting/crocheting books, interesting tools and friendly people. And I can always find something interesting for me in this shop

Ryan Anderson: Loved this place! My wife is the knitter but we all know Stephen! Not really but I've seen a bunch of his stuff on my wife's computer screen. 😉 The staff was great and very helpful.

Famke van der Wal: First let me start with saying that the staff is EXTREMELY friendly and helpful! Everyone was very willing to show me (a beginner) the many options the store has to offer. I went in to look for 1 specific type of yarn and left with a bag full, that's how wonderful it was! Yes, it's more pricey but it's 100% worth it: for a fair price you will get some really nice quality fibres, hours of fun and something special to wear! 10/10 would recommend :)

S Sommer: Gorgeous and beautiful shop. Very well kept. Very helpful and nice staff, even when I as customer no 1 billion sugested they sell their baskets 😄 Always ready to help, but also know you can use a lot of time just looking around and deciding. Many different yarns, especially many beautiful handdyed ones.

Stacey P: A wonderful selection of yarn at this lovely store, as well as a very large range of embroidery floss and supplies. I always find what I need for my craft projects here, and the service is very friendly too! I definitely recommend stopping by!

오혜영: Love this shop! For the last 3 years and half i had wonderful experience with this shop ( products + ambiance + staff).Great service, very helpful, and honest opinion! Highly recommend :)

Denise Strang: Amazing shop with very reasonable prices....i bought some lovely Lana Grossa yarn. The owner was so friendly and not at all pushy. I would go back if I were in Amsterdam....much better than the shop Stephen & Penelope.

Adrián Arroyo Mirantes: Excellent service. I reached out to them through their Facebook page for advice about their products and they were very helpful, nice and fast. I placed an order and everything arrived without issues and on time.

Meryam Tigchelaar: Best yarnshop in Amsterdam, where you can buy beautiful yarn and get good advice. Very friendly owner!

Karin Liljekvist: Very nice yarnshop and the owner (I think) was very helpful and kind. Many beautiful showpieces in the shop and the presentation is excellent. I got yarn for the nice little bear and tussah tweed yarn to make a scarf for my son.

Kathy Säbisch: Beautiful yarn store, wonderful yarn, very friendly, kind and helpful woman working there.

Izzy Hendriks: Great yarn store. The person working there was helped me find the right yarn, and explained where to find it in the store. They store the yarn in drawers, which is unique and tidy. A cozy atmosphere and reasonable prices.

zośka: a lot of things to choose from, good prices, friendly staff, and the location is lovely!

kathryn quillinan: What a lovely yarn shop, out of the main Town, but well worth a visit, you can get there quite easily by tram or walk, depending where you are staying, the owner was lovely, very helpful, and love the way the yarn is displayed, not open on Mondays, and closes around lunch time, good prices, well worth a visit 😀😀😀

De Afstap: what do users think?

Abbie Howson: Such a happy find. A good choice of yarns, books and other craft "stuff". And the lady who helped me was so welcoming. Recommended

Ina Magedanz: Very small shop that gets crowded very quickly is the downside to this shop. Otherwise a nice selection of premium and high end yarns like Rowan and gorgeous kits by Christel Seyfarth. Also a decent selection of needle point and cross stitch products. Nobody bothered to help me though. It might be because as a 30 something they believed me to be too young for knitting?

Anne Charlet: Wonderful shop. I think she must have every book about knitting ever printed! And all the Rowan yarn you could ever want, along with plenty of other wools too. A delightful shop in the perfect setting in such a beautiful city!!

sheena chapman: Been loving this wool shop for 30 years !! It has a wonderful range of Rowan yarns, plus specialists yarns & needles. Wonderful library of patterns & creative inspirations. 🤗💜

Adri H.B.: Great shop for knitting books especially those that are out of print and even some specialty books like stitch dictionaries from Japan. Great selection of Rowan yarns and generally friendly staff.

Karen Wilson: Lovely yarn, great service, and welcoming staff. Thank you for a warm memory of Amsterdam on a cold snowy day.

Nana Nasa: Lot of choices, the selling lady was just very lovely friendly and helpful, she also can speaks a bit of french ;)

Татьяна Doberants: Nice place! The woman who works there helped me a lot and we had a nice conversation!

Gerrard P.L. Molenaar: Fancy chocolate designs. Not cheap. Interesting Rolling Stones memorabilia.

Edith Tanniru: lovely shop with a very nice lady to help with selections.

De Steek: what do users think?

Sam Tsang: Really nice place. I did a beginners courses with my daughter on how to make bag, shirt, legging and skirt. Good instruction from the friendly staff. The place is a sewing cafe with lots of others doing different projects. The beginners course is 2 hours and you should be able to complete most of the projects in that time. But they don't guarantee you finish as you work at tour own pace as such after two hours if you haven't finished you will have to book more time for another day or finish it at home assuming you have a sewing machine. The place is a fabric store with lots of tables set up as sewing workstations with all the equipment you need. After doing the beginners course you will have the confidence to attempt your own projects. What I would like to see is for them to provide some digital notes or tutorials, some resources for the student such as places in Amsterdam for machines, equipment fabric and some online links to attempt further projects. This would be very useful to the student and would cost them very little effort to provide.

Athina Koumentakou (GR): Great idea but the implementation is not working. I visited Amsterdam for few days and I came across De Steek, so I decided to take a workshop and see how it works. My expectations were really high as it combines sewing workshops and sustainability at the same time! As I have some experience at sewing I chose not the beginners workshop (tote bag) but the bodysuit. Even if I know how the sewing machine works I needed some help from the person who was teaching as on how to place the pieces together correctly. Unfortunately, the person who was helping us didn't know how to sew this patron and I ended up with the pieces sewed wrongly. They told me to come the next day as there would be another person who could help me but my schedule was tight to spend more hours on a project that didn't work out. It was a horrible experience as except for the fact I didn't end up on knowing how to sew a bodysuit I also had to pay a lot of money for a project that taught me nothing. So, please next time if the person responsible for the workshop doesn't know how to sew the pattern just inform the client that this project can't be done right know and propose another instead.
Response: Hey Athina, Thank you for coming to our studio this week! I'm sad to see this reaction and hear about your feeling about the experience! It shouldn't be the feeling you go home with indeed and I understand the disappointment. I think, from my side of the story, maybe that there was a miscommunication. I thought you mentioned in the beginning of the session that you wanted to come back the next day anyways (two hours first day and two hours second day, which is a realistic time frame for making a body) and because the 2 hours of the first day were done, I thought it would be easier to continue on the second day with the steps that were left. There was one stitch that needed to be corrected. So indeed there was one mistake that the teacher made and I wanted to say sorry about that! Plus: sorry how we handled it, I really thought we would see you again for the next two hours the next day to finish the body together, so I didn't know there was a problem. I hope that you can also see that we are a company that works with humans and that they can also make a mistake. In my view, the beauty of the Sewing Cafe is that you can come with all the projects you want to make, you can make one of our patterns, bring your own or even make your own pattern in the studio with our help. But there is a lot of ways to make a garment, so that also means as teachers that we have to be flexible and look into every project and step individually. The teacher that helped you is new at De Steek, but I'm confident she has enough knowledge and also the passion to help our clients, so I hope you understand it wasn't her intention to leave you with this feeling. I still want to offer you to come back for free for the two hours to finish the project! Let me know if you'd like to take this offer. Wishing you the best, Natalie de Koning

Jiri Vrba: Took my first sewing class ever yesterday and cannot be happier for choosing I am Nold. After first lesson I, as absolute beginner, managed to put together nice tote back and learn a lot. Guidance provided by Natalie was brilliant and she really helped me make a progress. She was very helpful. Definitely made me motivated to take more classes and progress with my sewing. Also got some recommendation on further progress which is always nice. Like the vibe of the place, there is always nice cup of tea / coffee so looking forward to go back. If you ever wanted to learn how to saw, this is the place.

Ally Huang: I don't know why these guys only have two stars but whatever.. from me it's 5 STARS!!!! I am two thirds of the way through their lingerie making workshop and it's awesome! I'm super glad I found them and gladder (sp?) still that I took the plunge to take this course. Natalie who's the lingerie making specialist is our teacher and she's great! There's always a pot of water going for a hot cup of tea and plenty of fabrics to fawn over. I would only love if the classes were slightly longer because you get so caught up, 2 hours zips by before you know it. Highly recommended if you have been meaning to start or finish a sewing project or- take on one of their workshops. The ladies who run this are super great!

MIN graphic: This is my one of my favourite places in Amsterdam. The great thing is that they offer workshops and courses as well as an open Sewing Cafe where you can pop in whenever is convenient, even for one single class. In the past year I have done a Pattern Drawing course, Fashion Design, and a Quilt course and learned so much. The teachers are very knowledgeable, patient and kind. They always help me to find practical solutions for sewing issues and give a boost of confidence when I get stuck and feel a bit lost.. Also, the atmosphere in the Sewing Cafe is very pleasant. It is nice to see what all the other students are working on and the mix of beginners and more advanced sewers is inspiring. I rate The Steek 5 stars! - Corinne de Korver

Melissa Reed: Fantastic! I just moved to Amsterdam and have always wanted to learn to embroider and these classes were amazing. Perfect balance of general instruction, individual support, and creating a nice social environment that allowed everyone to be quiet or chat while they learned and worked. I cannot wait to take more classes. Beginner sewing classes here I come.

jennifer saunders: I've now done 3 single day workshops here and all have been fantastic. All 3 instructors created a nice environment and were more than helpful with instructions. Also supplied tasty biscuits and tea which were appreciated. And I've now learned 3 new skills!

husna: I took Beginner Sewing courses 1 and 2 here. I made a tote bag, it was easy for me because I have a little bit of sewing experience but still I learned some details. Then I made a T-shirt which made me use a serger machine for the first time and I made a round and flexible collar for the first time. Then I made leggings with an elastic fabric which was a new challenge for me. And my final project was trousers with non-elastic actually really hard fabric ( I forgot the type of fabric) without zippers, only with buttons. Especially trying to arrange the width of waist was a very instructive challenge. I had one last lesson left but it was not logical to start a new project, so I brought one of my old large Tshirts that I've been thinking of upcycling. I made it smaller, suitable for my body. I got lots of tips on that day from my teacher about upcycling and rearranging old clothes. I am happy with my experience here. Even with non-stop changing Covid measurements, I could learn a lot. Thanks De Steek and see you next season:)

Liz Koetsier: First, the good things: the teacher taught me how to use the sewing machine properly as a beginner. She also recommended a nice place to get a good machine in the Amsterdam area. She was friendly. Opportunities: The methods she taught me on making a scrunchie are all the wrong ways of doing it. She is doing a project while teaching, and if she's not doing embroidery, she is on her phone. I felt bad that I asked her something because it seems like I am interrupting her phone time. It took me almost two hours to go there, got lost in the middle of Amsterdam and despite that, had high hopes that my €30+ trial can succeed in signing up for other workshops that they offer.(I was willing to spend more)Although it wasn't as bad, it would not make me sign up for more. If you only want some fun projects, maybe this is an excellent place for you. If you are pretty serious about sewing, you can save some and learn the hard way online.
Response: Hi Liz, Thank you for your elaborate feedback! First of all: I’m glad to hear that you liked the way we taught you the basics on the sewing machine, that’s really important to us. Too bad to hear that you have some complaints as well! When it’s really quiet in the Sewing Cafe, sometimes, in the meantime, a teacher can do something themselves next to it (like in this case the embroidery), but they should still be able to answer all your questions and help you with the progress actively and they shouldn’t be on their phone, so I will talk to the teacher who did this personally about it! I’m not sure how the scrunchy was taught, but with sewing there are always more than one way to do it. A teacher can have their personal style of sewing and teaching as well. Even a scrunchy can be sewn in different ways. And when it’s the first time behind the sewing machine, a project always takes longer, because there is a lot to learn still. But that said, I feel sad that you feel this way! I want to offer you a free workshop to see if you still feel this after this. I will send you an e-mail about it personally. All the best, Natalie de Koning (owner)

Richelle van den Berg: I loved the swimwear course. Teacher Nathalie knows what she talks about and I could actually wear my swimsuit! I was feeling proud wearing it. The next course will be a lingerie course. Very excited!

Cora's Knit Knacks: what do users think?

Elenore Mrs.MuffinPuff: Got a custom-made crochet sheep from Cora’s Knit Knacks. It is absolutely adorable, fluffy, and huggable!Everything is beautifully made and in good quality^^I am super happy with how it turned out and Cora was very nice:)
Response: Thank you so much for your nice words!

MonsterousDesigns: I had a virtual crochet lesson with Cora and it was great! Cora was extremely helpful and went through teaching me all the techniques that I would need in order to complete my pattern. She has also been very helpful with answering follow up questions since my lesson.
Response: I'm glad you are happy with how the lessons went!

Sarf essas: Had a little custom made thing done, it looks amazing and was done way faster than i imagined, absolutely love it.
Response: Thank you so much for your nice words!

Stefani H: A few weeks ago Cora wrote about the pattern of a handy, nostalgic shopper. I was immediately excited but can't crochet. I commented under the photo that I love it and would like to have it. I also wrote to her that I can't crochet and she wrote back saying that's no problem at all, she also crochets to order. I neatly received the order link to the bag in the webshop and I ordered it right away. It is handmade so thought it would take a while but I already received it yesterday. Packaged very carefully and I am happy because it is really beautiful. Thank you Cora, I will definitely recommend you!
Response: Thank you for your nice review Stefani! Have fun with the bag 😁

Simone Haneveer-van Breugel: Cora made a custom camera buddy for me. Very happy with it and it is of good quality. That way I can get a lot of kids to look at the camera! :D
Response: Glad to hear you're happy with it! It was really a super fun assignment to make!

Anita Terlouw: Cora has already made several things for me. From beautiful fine poinsettias interwoven with gold thread, to handy baskets for our offices. She tunes in well, empathizes and then creates something wonderful. She even puts time and love into the packaging and every delivery is accompanied by a warm card. Recently I occasionally order homemade packages from Cora. These are also super nice packaged, the patterns are very easy to read, the yarn, the matching crochet hook and the stitch markers are all equally beautiful
Response: It's great to hear that you are still so satisfied!

Nicole Adelaars: At Cora's Knit Knack I have already ordered scrunchies and some nice crochet figures for fall. What I like so much is the personal approach, the finish and that everything can be personalized. It is all handmade and durable and can therefore last a very long time!
Response: Thank you for your nice review ❤️

No Name: I recently ordered scrunchies for my daughter. She was so happy with it! Finally original, handmade and sustainable scrunchies. Moreover, the quality is superb. I heartily recommend Cora's products! Greetings, Elma
Response: Thank you for your beautiful words!
