In this informative if intensive workshop I will inform you about the Dutch midwifery system. We take the time to practise the various breathing exercises and a number of massage techniques in the different stages of labour which can be very helpful. Your partner will know the do’s and don’ts and the best way to support you. You learn about available pain relief possibilities so you can make an informed choice.

After the course I will send digital handouts including a concept birth plan.

BiA is an acronym for Being in Action. This is one of the core principals we teach in our training. The foundation skill of a doula is to be present, in her own body, in the space, with the woman and her partner, with the process unfolding, without judgement or expectation of a specific result. When our doulas come into action, when it is required or asked for, it is from this place of being present. One comes with the other. There is a parallel with the Taoist concept of ‘wei wu wei’: ‘action without action’ or ‘effortless doing’ – in a doula context, it can be translated as, “to do without expecting a certain result”.

Furthermore, Bia is a Greek goddess, daughter of Styx and titan Pallas (the river Styx was the boundary between the realm of Earth and the Underworld). Bia is the personification of vital force, raw energy, power, might, bodily strength and compulsion. We even find violence as one of her attributes, which can be interpreted as a power that is in action and doesn’t stop, perhaps like birth can sometimes be.

In Crow (a Siouan language), bía means ‘be’, ’rely on’, ‘have confidence in’ and ‘woman’. In Kunuma (African language) bia means water. In Irish bia means ‘food’ and in old-Irish, it means ‘I am’. In Norwegian, bia is a feminim form of ‘bien’, which means bee. The bee symbolozizes community, brightness and personal power. The ancient Druids saw the bee as symobolising the sun, the Goddess, celebration, and community.

Onlangs kwam ik online in een discussie terecht over het -onverdund- innemen van essentiële oliën. Dit prompte me om deze blogpost te maken.

Ik hoor steeds vaker verhalen van mensen die essentiële oliën innemen, rechtstreeks op de huid aanbrengen, of onverdund in het badwater doen. En ik hoor of lees ook dat mensen hoofdpijn krijgen, de huid geirriteerd aanvoelt, zich emotioneel, labiel voelen of dat hun baby’tje alleen maar aan het huilen is na het aanbrengen van de essentiële olie. Wanneer ik vraag of ze deze adviezen van een aromatherapeut hebben gekregen, is vaak het antwoord ontkennend. Het is de verkoper die actief aanbeveelt om oliën onverdund in te nemen en onverdund op de huid aan te brengen. De oliën zijn ‘zo puur’ dat het veilig is.

één milliliter essentiële olie staat gelijk aan 0,5 tot wel 6 kilo bloemblaadjes/takken/wortels van de betreffende plant. Met andere woorden, essentiële oliën zijn zéér geconcentreerd: 1 druppel basilicum olie heeft veel meer actieve bestanddelen dan 1 heel basilicumplantje.

I was shocked how ok Lily's labor was despite what you see out there on TV or hear from your friends. Then I got devastated how it changed my everyday everything, and I mean EVERYTHING.. after which I decided to do what my dad always told me to do: figure it out. More! You can go and create another one! So we did, his name is Miko.

Miko is everything that his sister wasn't: he doesn't sleep, wants to eat my food, your food, everybody's food, he climbs the stairs before walking, puts his fingers in electricity sockets, loves falling with his head backward, downward, really any direction, and he is the cutest, sweetest, little cuddly thing ever.. Which saves him really.. and which also proves his sister was a unicorn baby to us..
