The Book Exchange - Used English-language Books: what do users think?

Sander Hoogendoorn: Really sweet and extensive English language second hand bookstore, with good books in many categories. Really nice owner too.
Response: Many thanks for your visit, Sander. We are glad to hear we offered you a pleasant experience and that you found the store to your liking. Fijne feestdagen!

Miriam Bogdana: Such a nice place! Amazing vibes, friendly and helpful staff! Huge huge variety of books
Response: That's very kind of y ou, Miriam! Thank you for taking the time to visit us and let us know you appreciate the work we do. We hope you found some interesting reads!

Rosa Rodriguez: I came back to the shop last week after 3 years of pause. I enjoyed as always every minute of the visit. It is always a pleasure to browse the several floors the shop has and discover some hidden gems. Prices are very reasonable. The owner is always very helpful and nice to chat with. It is always my first option to buy books in Amsterdam. Hopefully I can come back soon.
Response: Thank you for visiting the store again, Rosa, and for taking the time to review us. Sorry for the late reply: we don't often log in to the Google Page. We are glad to hear you found your last visit to the store to be enjoyable and that the store was well-stocked. We hope you found some fine additions to your collection and that you enjoy many happy readings in these cold autumn/winter days.

Anna Anning: What a gorgeous find for book lovers! Glad to see it had a lot of customers. Friendly guy behind the counter helped me with my query. A great selection of books and of good quality. I felt the prices were reasonable. The space is a little cramped (you need to watch your head if going to the basement). This was part of the charm imo but good to mention. Definitely not wheelchair friendly.
Response: Thank you for your visit and review, Anna!! We hope the store was not too warm and humid during your visit: it's hard to cool down the store during heat waves, as the doors are closed during the night for obvious reasons. And yes, unfortunately, our old building is not wheelchair accessible. There are stairs (no ramp) leading up into the store, and there are two small flights of stairs to visit the downstairs floors and one flight to go upstairs. For a wide selection of (new) English-language books, we recommend American Book Center: all its floors are wheelchair accessible (they have a lift/elevator).

Chris R: Really really great bookstore, super friendly and helpful British owner. You’ll Definitely find some nice books here. Worth to roam around in here.
Response: Thank you for your review, Chris! We are glad to hear your visit to the store was enjoyable and rewarding enough for your time. We will keep working hard to make sure we have a wide selection of titles for people to enjoy browsing through.

Monika Dimitrova: Amazing place! So many hidden gems and so many collectors editions of many popular books for very fair prices.
Response: Thank you, Monika, for taking the time to visit and review us! We are glad to hear you enjoyed your visit and found the store and its collection to your liking!

Lina: Nice second-hand bookstore packed with lots of books in English, both older and newer titles. There are several fiction shelves (my favorite). To be honest I was expecting a few books to be cheaper than they actually were, but after visiting other bookstores in Amsterdam I have noticed that these are normal prices here. Also, seeing as most books are in perfectly fine condition it makes sense. (I noticed that sometimes you find a title twice, and if one book is in slightly "worse" condition it happens that it is 50 cents cheaper. Seems fair.) Like anywhere in Amsterdam you can pay by card. I bought four books here and am happy. Would definitely come back.
Response: Thank you for your review, Lina! We are happy to hear you had a good experience during your visit. We are also relieved to read you were not disappointed with our fiction section: this section suffers a massive buy-sale imbalance in the summer, when number of book sales rapidly outgrow the number of people selling us their books. We also understand that book prices in Amsterdam are rather high (compared to, say, France, where the 1981 Lang Law sets a fixed price for books, which often sell for low prices). Many of the books in our stock were originally in American Book Center (a great store, if you are looking for new titles!). And because we are completely dependent on people selling us their books, we have to make sure we pay fair prices (cash or store credit) to people who take the trouble to sell us their books. We hope you enjoy your books and have a good summer!

Alessandro Torboli: Adorable shop of second hand books with extremely huge collections of literature with a particular propensity to English language. The place inside is way bigger than it might seem from outside and the range of books varies between every genre and subject. If not to buy books I recommend visiting this place just for the experience of exploring the various rooms hidden deep into the building and to witness the smell of ancient paper.
Response: Thank you for your visit as well as the time you took to share your experience. We are happy to hear you enjoyed browsing the [ever-changing!] collection. Running a good bookstore requires a balance between buying the obvious bestsellers (Murakami, Tolstoy, Kafka) as well as also consciously buying books that are inefficient from a retail point of view, but necessary to keep in stock even though they'll stay longer on the shelves (Lehman, Exley, von Arnim). It is good to hear you enjoyed the wide variety of books, and we wish you many happy visits to other bookstore as well! Kind regards, and happy holidays!

Michal Barkoci: Unfortunately closed during my visit. One of the most important antiquarian bookshop in the town. You can escape the rain on Bad weather days.Amsterdam hides many beautiful places and attractions.
Response: That's a pity, Michal. On Sunday's all bookshops are closed at the Oudemanhuispoort. Hope to see you another time!

Celia Mazy: very nice but hard to find the books you want because it’s so small

Δημοσθένης Βουγιούκας: Very interesting place for those who like old books as well as those looking to save some money and paper by buying used books

Markus M. (Crazzyshizzle): Very nice book store with lots of collectibles and very interesting stuff!

Justin Labelle: Cute with paperbacks at roughly 5 euro

R D: If you love used books, this is the place for you.

Aynur Dogan: Nostalgic beautiful place, with memories from my university years.

Béla Papp: Amazing!

blau stein: The book market in the Jewish quarter has its very own charm. It combines history, atmosphere and that little shopping experience. Away from the mainstream, you can let your soul dangle and relax wonderfully.

Amsterdam Book Market: what do users think?

Francisco Gutierrez: Interesting people and good prices for old fashioned books

Robert Diel: All year round on every Friday, Street Book Market at Spui. Boekenmarkt op het Spui. Stalls with used and antiquarian books. Some stall holders specialise in books on specific subjects, art, or history, or English language. Near Athenaeum Book store and American Book Centre and Waterstone. Also near Begijnhof and Kalverstraat. Well worth a visit.

paulo ferreira: On Sunday at the Spui we are the art market not the book market!!!

Anna Paulart: Nice place to find some great collection .. u need to hunt for the correct ones :)-

Shejanul Islam: Old school and some wonderful traditional booksellers. It was kind of hidden from the tourists which makes it even more fun.

Luca Melchionna: Among the best second hand book markets I’ve ever seen anywhere, and I travel a lot

Ella Paull: Cute but small

Jos Grimbergen: The place to be on the Friday bookmarket. Fine offers.

arthur park: A true gem for open minded book lovers. Opening hours can be wild. Hopefully this shop will be around for at least a few decades. Excellent shop window strategies going on.

Derek Linz: The owner of this shop is very friendly and helpful. He offers a very well organized collection of interesting and hard to find books, in both English and Dutch.

Danielle Gochez: The coolest shop to get lost in. The owner is so kind and helpful!

Gary H.: Awesome place.

Xavier van Leeuwe: Colorful owner Jan is full of stories and good cheer, and knowledge of books. It is wonderfully old-fashioned to search among his own paintings. There are fewer and fewer such fantastic things. Now go. Good books, great friendly prices. Dutch, philosophy, you name it.

Eric Shimonson: Almost lo ireali my stay in this very special Book Universe. The owner Jan has made it possible where possible. My thanks are big!!!!!

Joris Jansen: This is my favorite used bookstore! Good prices, a nice range of philosophy and literature and a very sympathetic owner who is always willing to help you. If you like books, you should definitely go here!

Nicky Kerimova: Nice shop! Wide range, I believe you can find everything. Books from the floor to the ceiling. The owner is clearly a man with a passion for books. I was looking for books on photography and found exactly what I needed, 2 books in fact! And the prices are very reasonable. Worth a visit! ☺️

Anja: A bookshop. A unique place.

Jelena Cvjetkovic: Fantastic place with a friendly owner. Chances are that the book you are looking for is on his shelf for € 5!

Boekhandel De Slegte Amsterdam: what do users think?

Phil Mead: Large multi-floor second-hand bookstore in Amsterdam. An enjoyable place to browse with friendly and helpful staff, a central city location (a tram stop is conveniently sited opposite the entrance). Their online search and ordering system works well and is a great place to start looking for that elusive out-of-print book!

kevin dignam: Good used and remaindered books. Mainly Dutch but a lot of English also.

Alice Blue: Lovely place, I went for the sci-fi and fantasy section and I ended up buying books for my job as well. Really nice, well-organized and cozy!

Lea Stakenborg: Very quiet, clean and almost cozy Bookstore with an amazing selection of old and new pieces! Was impressed to find German Engineering Books from early 1900 in fantastic shape. I came to the store to buy books to study for a Driver’s License, but couldn’t find them unfortunately. I’m sure they would’ve helped me to order, but I wanted them immediately. If you like to find a good read, De Slegte is your spot in Central Amsterdam!

Janssen & Janssen: Great place to get food books. ( Bought a couple)

Claudia Parra: For orders online: I once ordered and everything went alright. Second time I waited for 1 month and received no notification even though my order should have been delivered in 2 weeks the latest. I had to call them many time to finally find the customer service number (not in internet) and then they told me that actually only then they contacted the provider and they said they will deliver my book to them "maybe" in 2 weeks so that they could not tell me when will I received. Terrible experience.

PK: Good bookstore. Lots of second-hand books.
